Kristen, a.k.a. The Frugal Girl posts her weekly food waste on Fridays. She has inspired me to be more mindful to not waste food, and to use it up before it ends up inedible and fuzzy in the refrigerator. So, I’m jumping on board and joining in the Food Waste Friday fun 😉
This week, I wasted a potato, but I don’t think it was my fault. I bought a 10lb bag of potatoes on the weekend and when I went to pull some out mid-week, there was a very rotten, ugly one in the bag. I think they snuck it in already rotten 🙁 I also had to sacrifice half an onion that had gone off, but was able to use the other half, so it wasn’t a total waste. Oh – and I had just over a litre of lactose-free milk (which is ++ expensive that regular lactose laden milk) that was set to expire the next day, so I divided it up into five 1-cup servings, bagged and froze them to use in later baking – so no waste there – yay!
I don’t have a picture this week because I hadn’t committed to this post until this morning, but I’ll make sure to snap pictures of any food waste next week 🙂 It may be a little gross sometimes, but knowing that may help me to use things up to avoid having to publish embarrassing rotten food pictures too often 😉
Welcome to Food Waste Friday. It is very frustrating to buy a bag of produce that already has bad pieces. I have noticed that they make the bags very hard to see through so you don’t really know what you’re getting. Otherwise, it looks like a pretty good week for you.
Thanks for the welcome, I’m excited to join FWF! I know – it’s hard enough sometimes to get through to the last bit of produce without starting out with a rotten piece – argh. But yes, overall, it was a pretty good week. I’m really hoping for less next week though 🙂 Have a great weekend!
